CHESTER CANOE CLUB NEWSLETTER

SPRING 2008

Review

In November 2007 the club was awarded £6,720 from The National Lottery. Since the award a huge amount of work has been done to replace the lower racks and to install an equipment store opposite the garage. Steve Chorley, Andrew Parkinson, Bob Scholey, Dave Madely and others are aiming to complete this work in May. The new club Captin Bill Broughall has also been busy putting up fences, replacing timbers to the building, changing locks and more. A huge thanks goes to everyone (including those not mentioned above) who has committed so much time and effort to improving the club.

The grant will also help improve the clubs equipment with more beginner boats, stable racing K2’s and paddles.

2008 promises to be a busy year with a new club trip to Snowdonia, all the old favourites and a full calendar of events, lets hope we actually have normal summer weather this year!

Overnight camps

This summer we will be running two camps: -

  1. Training Camp – Llyn Gwynant, Snowdonia - Date to be arranged (provisional date 17/18 May)

A popular lakeside campsite for groups, situated in a beautiful valley in the shadow of Snowdon. It’s a great site that allows camp fires and BBQ’s. New WC and shower block. This trip will include structured      daily training on the lake but will (according to the weather) also include walking, surfing, biking (if you bring one) and trips out.

  1. Anglesey, Rhoscoln – Sea canoeing weekend. Date 21/22 June

Outdoor Alternative Centre camp site. This site is only 200m from the main beach accessed by a traffic free single track road and path. Rhoscolyn bay is a naturally sheltered sandy bay popular with divers and windsurfers due to its shallow depth.  A quarter of a mile off shore lie a group of islands that harbour seals. The coast has numerous caves, and arches to explore.

Providing the weather is OK you can get out to the island. Other activities are of course, bikes, BBQ, beach and lighthouse.
