Hi Paddlers,

Summer was hear ... seems to have gone again ..... but hopefully not for long, that Club BBQ must be getting nearer. Lots of excitement building as the Race season gets underway .......

Hare 'n Hounds Race 6

Thanks to all that turned out for the Hare 'n Hounds it was a good Race, though not quite as warm as we've had! A little bit wet and windy, but a good handicap meant we all soon got warmed up trying to catch the Hares in front, and it ended up being a very close race!

The Points were awarded on the times taken for the Time Trial 1 course i.e.: the course completed by everyone. Div 5 and 6 paddlers had to do the longer course, which added in the Barrel and back, Time Trial 2.

Juniors David and Jake had a battle from the start very impressive paddling as they finished only 1 second apart. Struan having been promoted to Div 6 was a little concerned about the extra mileage ... but no need to be worried at all, as he kept in touch with Roger most of the way, and excellent result and a real promising young paddler for the club, along with David and Jake. (who are all training hard for the Cheshire Ring Team).

Peter and Bob had some excellent wash hanging practice between them and Peter just pipped Bob passed the winning post. Jean and Adele didn't manage to catch Roger until after T.T.1 (some excuse about paddling up to Farndon and back the day before) but after a strong 2nd half they just about overtook Roger. He is certainly going to take some catching this season ... he's paddling very well despite him complaining about being old! It was good to see James Knott and Peter Bennet back, both having good races.

Also well done to juniors Rona and Maggie, a special mention to Maggie who was so pleased as it was her first trip to the road bridge! So well done to all and once again good race practise especially for those going to Worcester on 22nd May.

Hare 'n Hounds Race 7

The next 3 races are on THURSDAY NIGHTS at 6.30 9th June, 7th July, 4th August. We are halfway through the series, with Roger Williams overall leader but with 6 races to count its still wide open for the Divisional prizes, so hope to see you on 9th June 6.00 for a 6.30 start.

The Cheshire Ring Team is coming together, Jean and Adele are doing a solo K2 Run, whilst Bob Scholey and Carol Hatton are organising 10 paddler relay K2 team, the Team is almost sorted at the moment it is -

Bob Scholey and Jake Oldfield

John and David Hatton

Roger Williams and Carol Hatton

(Hopefully) Peter Bennet and Struan Fishburn

Mark and Owain Williams

After a very success full 6 paddler relay last year that finished in 17hrs 18 mins, we are really pleased to have 2 teams in the Cheshire Ring this time, its great to see the commitment from the juniors and to see the seniors supporting them and giving them plenty of encouragement. With 6 weeks to go Chester Canoe Club will be putting up some good competition to the other ring competitors ... so say focused and keep getting those miles in! Hopefully the weather will be beautiful like last year, it was a fantastic weekend and a great pleasure to be up all night, so hears looking forward to 26th and 27th June!

On another positive note the Tuesday Time Trials and Barrel Races are going very well to.

Reports From Bob Scholey

Time Trial Report 3rd May (results attached)

Two paddlers returning to the Tuesday evening sessions faired very differently on their first outings of the season. Jake Oldfield in the Juniors returned where he left off last year, recording the fastest time so far to win the Junior event. But Peter Bennett in the seniors found it much harder going, his lack of paddling showing when he died away on the second lap. Only Roger Williams and Melvin Swallow did the mandatory portages in the senior 2 and 3 categories (div 4-6 and 1-3 respectively). We need to get more people out of their boats and running up the river bank before we get much further into the competition season.

Barrel Race Report 10th May (results attached)

Another 'Golden Oldie' crept out of the woodwork on Tuesday when Mark Tidman joined us for the barrel races and recorded a reasonable time. But the fastest time of the night was produced by Mark and Owain Williams in their K2, now training for the Cheshire ring, who went round the course in 12min 24 sec.

Snippits

I'm always asking for any news as to what are paddlers have been up to, here's 2 snippits.

Well Done to Ros Clark who has just completed her first half marathon in 2 hours 3 mins, she just wanted to dip under 2 hours, but is was a windy day ....... so she's not abandoned her running shoes just yet ... so watch out she may just have the urge to do another!

Also Congratulations to Kate Ashley who paddled in the Kayak Marathon Varsity Race at Oxford. She had a great race and came 2nd female, she was first Cambridge paddler home, but not quite strong enough to beat the Oxford paddler Rachael Brixey (who had just done the DW!) Kate said it was a great atmosphere ......  though VERY LOW KEY compared to the Boat Race!

We are well into race season now so if you've got any races lined up, marathon, slalom, whitewater, results, canoe tips or stories, you want to share with the club, I'd love to hear from you and so would the rest of the Club so I can publish them in our Monthly Canoe Email News.

Its good to share News!!
