Subject: Tuesday Canoeing Nights
Hi Everyone,
More news this week ........Bob has just sent me this report about Tuesday evenings -
Tuesday
Training Sessions
This week
the Tuesday night barrel race started in the gloom and finished in pitch
darkness so it's time to call a halt to the summer series of timed barrel races
and time trials. From now on Tuesday nights will be
organised
on a more informal basis with a mixture of sessions coordinated by a variety of
people. Just turn up on the night and see what is happening.
However the nights are dark now (as we found out this week) and as the autumn
and winter progress the conditions will get colder. Juniors should not paddle in
the dark unless with the express permission of one of the coaches and then they
must have both lights and buoyancy aids and never paddle alone. Seniors should
also give serious thought to the implications of paddling in the cold and dark.
Many of the seniors will be donning buoyancy aids and switching to more stable
boats, should you be doing the same? Also with the rowers and their motor boats
using the river in the dark there is really no excuse for all us canoeist not to
be using lights.
The Tuesday night sessions over the summer have been well supported and the
overall results for both the time trials and the barrel races are attached.
In the time trials it's the golden oldies who have shone through on the div 7-9
course with Ray Stamp claiming 1st place and Andrew Parkinson 3rd. The two were
split by the youngster Jake Oldfield in 2nd place. Over the div 4-6 course Roger
Williams was streets ahead in 1st place with Bob Scholey in 2nd and Jean Ashley
in 3rd while in the div 1-3 category Melvin Swallow had a walk over.
The barrel races were contested by groupings of age and gender. Jake Oldfield
just beat David Hatton to come 1st in the juniors with Struan Fishburn in 3rd
place. In the ladies Carol Hatton won by a huge margin from Jean Ashley with
Adele Blakeborough 3rd. And finally in the seniors
Roger Williams repeated his success of the time trial by taking 1st position but
this time the second man, John Hatton, was much closer. Steve Chorley was 3rd.
See the
Time trial &
Barrel race results.
Enjoy your paddling over the winter, and we can do it all over again.
Bob
On behalf of everyone, I would just like to say a big thank-you to Bob for re-vitalizing the Tuesday Sessions, they have gone really well this year with plenty of canoeists joining in, lots of action, hard work, a few spills ... and plenty of sweat! Thank-you also to everyone who gave up their own paddle to do the time keeping ... most appreciated!
Liffey Descent
Also congratulations to Colin and Brian who had a great race at the Liffey Descent on Saturday last winning the Canadian Doubles class for the third time! They were 9 minutes ahead of the next crew coming home in 2hrs 33mins ... leaving 36 crews behind in there wake! Well done Colin and Brian!
